Modern hygiene products in our day are no longer unimaginable without adhesives. In addition to forming a strong bond, adhesives are expected to be generally low-emission, odorless, toxicologically safe and skin-friendly. Contaminations can cause changes in viscosity, odor and gas formation, discoloration, shift in pH level and even the growth of a visible mold layer (biofilm) on the adhesive surface. In short, impurities have a detrimental effect on the quality of the adhesive and in the worst case can render it unusable. Preservatives are added to dispersions to protect the adhesive in closed containers and to minimize the risk after the containers have been opened. However, the effect of these preservatives is of limited duration and depends on the amount added. The already limited amount of preservatives added to the dispersion has been further constrained by new legal requirements. As a result, the risk of contamination of dispersion adhesives with microorganisms will increase in the future and maintaining a maximum level of hygiene will become more prominent than ever.
